At the moment the author of these lines seems to have a subscription to third albums, because the Portuguese metallers MASTER DY have also recently released their third long-play song “Fructus: A Master's Zodiac”.
The band distills their very own metallic alloy of death, black, power, symphonic and gothic metal as well as pop and modern elements. At the forefront is singer and composer Dy Moob (Madre Goth) with her versatile, powerful songs and vocals, alongside co-author, singer and lead guitarist Mr. Draco.
The twelve tracks, minus the short, fast intro 'Master's Zodiac', represent a dark reinterpretation of the zodiac and its constellations and signs.
As I said: the quintet creates its very own, varied sound and shifts or ignores any stylistic boundaries or restrictions: MASTER DY 2.0, so to speak. The focus is on a high energy level and dynamic, intense tracks.
While the first pieces are pleasing, but still a little babbling past the listener, I to the melodic-hymnic 'Ephermeral Void' with its outstandingly dominant drums, lots of electronics and a short guitar solo. really listen for the first time
'Solitary Ember' also presents itself as a modern industrial pop number with rap parts and lots of synth power. An incredible amount happens and a catchy melody, male screams and polyphonic vocals as well as a short solo round off the song.
'Sepulchral Equinox' begins with choral singing and first expands in a tough and doomy, electronically wafting manner, then with hard modern riffs, another good chorus and versatile vocals, before 'October's Haunting' turns out to be a fast, hard duet with growls and screams presented to both vocalists.
With the great 'Nocturnal Veil' the whole thing takes another exciting and unexpected turn, because the dark, fast, electronic song is reminiscent of Pain and Gothminister and here Mr. Draco takes on the lead vocals all by himself before the slightly orchestral, less spectacular ' Frostbound Sonata concludes the disc.
MASTER DY invite the listener on a unique expedition into largely unexplored musical territory and push genre boundaries with their creative, innovative and entertaining sound. Anyone willing to embrace chaos and discover the unknown will be rewarded with a surprising mix of styles and a bunch of strong songs.
Michael Gaspar gives it 8 out of 10 points
